Brendan Rodgers: England learned lesson from Daniel Sturridge injury

LIVERPOOL -- Brendan Rodgers believes that England boss Roy Hodgson has learned a lesson over the Daniel Sturridge injury saga.

Hodgson has left the Liverpool striker out of his squad for the forthcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia after having a conversation with Rodgers.

The Reds manager has spoken publicly of his irritation at the manner in which Sturridge picked up a thigh injury while with England on Sep. 5.

Sturridge, 25, has not played since suffering the problem during a training session two days after playing 89 minutes for his country in a 1-0 friendly win over Norway.

Rodgers suggested at the time that England had pushed the forward too hard, arguing that he would normally only undertake light training on the second day after a game in order to allow him to recover fully.

Sturridge, who is closing in on a new contract that would keep him at Anfield until 2019, could play some part in Liverpool's Premier League match at home to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

But Rodgers is adamant that, even so, the striker is not ready to return for his country.

He said: "I don't think the same thing will happen again. With the conversations I've had with Roy, they've looked at that.

"I understand his position. He's only got a few days to work with players, and he'll probably take away the fact that having that intensity on the second day is something that you can't do.

"But you can still work players. We work players here on the second day. But it has to be tapered to the individual need of the player.

"I don't think we'll see that situation again, though."

Hodgson insisted on Thursday that there had been no fall-out with Rodgers over the injury.

The Liverpool manager, asked if he felt that the Liverpool and England medical teams were at odds with each other in terms of assessing what was best for the player, responded: "It's not something to discuss now."

However, Rodgers was keen to stress that he is on good terms with Hodgson.

He said: "I've got good communication with Roy. We spoke at length yesterday on the situation.

"You have to look at every individual player. Every player is different. I respect that he has work to do internationally, but my thoughts are for Liverpool's players, and what their needs are.

"We agreed that it was probably too soon for Daniel to meet up with England, irrespective of whether he was involved this weekend or not.

"He hasn't trained with the team at all since his injury, and it wasn't the right time for him to go. It was amicable. There's no issue."
