Wayne Rooney's 'stupid' tackle is inexcusable, says Gary Neville

Gary Neville believes his former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney can have no arguments after his red card he was given for what he described as a "stupid" tackle on West Ham's Stewart Downing last Saturday.

Neville played alongside the United captain for many years at United and is currently part of the coaching team of an England national side that is led by Rooney, but he suggested the striker let his teammates down with his rash challenge.

"Rooney can have no arguments whatsoever," Neville said on Sky Sports. "You do want to break play up but the mistake Rooney makes is the height of the contact.

"It's stupid, it's instinctive. United can't afford to lose any more players and he's going to be missing for a month now with a big game against Chelsea coming up."

Rooney has apologised for the challenge and confirmed he has no intention of appealing the three match suspension that will rule him out for United's Premier League fixtures in October, including the clash against title favourites Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Oct. 26.
