Monk praises Swansea's Dyer and Routledge after win over West Brom

Garry Monk believes Swansea pair Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge should be in Roy Hodgson's England squad on current form.

Hodgson preferred Tottenham winger Andros Townsend to either of the in-form Swansea widemen when he named his squad for next week's friendly against Norway and the opening Euro 2016 qualifier in Switzerland last Thursday.

Townsend has yet to start a Premier League game for Spurs this season and Dyer and Routledge responded to their omission by providing the goals as Swansea extended their perfect Premier League start with a 3-0 home victory over West Brom

Routledge registered with a spectacular 18-yard volley and Dyer grabbed a double to take his goal tally for the season to three.

"I've talked about it many times and said before you have to watch them to select them,'' said Swansea manager Monk.

"They can only do what they're doing and they have to improve and make it difficult for any international manager not to pick them.

"On form, yes, I think they should be in [the England squad]. But maybe I'm biased because they're my players.

"But we understand that it's early in the season and it's not something we talk about much.

"If it comes great, but we just make sure the football's as good as possible.''

Swansea are certainly doing that with Monk having masterminded four straight victories when also taking the Capital One Cup defeat of Rotherham into account -- the club's best start to a season for 91 years.

"It's a good start but that's all it is,'' Monk said. "There's a long way to go and a lot more work to do, but it's good to have the winning habit.

"We know what we are. We'll try to get to that 40-point barrier as quickly as possible, that will always be our target.

"It's only our fourth year in the Premier League and expectations come with winning games but we have to get there as soon as possible.''

West Brom boss Alan Irvine lamented Jonas Olsson's costly slip which handed Dyer his second-minute opener.

"It could not have been a worse start,'' said Irvine. "You spend a week getting ready for the game, develop a game and somebody slips.

"That can't be legislated for. It makes a tough game an even tougher one and we certainly got rocked by that.

"We gave the ball away too cheaply, especially in the final third, but as it was looking as if things were settling down we make another mistake and we're 2-0 down and desperate for half-time to come.''

Irvine admitted many of his players are still settling in at the club after a busy summer of comings and goings at The Hawthorns.

"A lot of them are not fit at the moment,'' Irvine said. "We lost 13 players over the summer and so had to replace all of them.

"But the players we've signed have taken longer -- for a variety of reasons -- to get them in. We brought in a number of lads who weren't attached or weren't training with their clubs and we've got to try to get them up to speed.

"We've got players who are in desperate need of a preseason and we've got to get them working together as quickly as we can.''
