The game was one of few real chances, particularly in the first half, with Magpies midfielder Remy Cabella sending one wide when he might have done better. The visitors had further opportunities just after the break, with Daryl Janmaat having a header pushed over by Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan and firing a shot just off-target. Magpies substitute and debutant Siem de Jong was then denied by a decent Guzan save towards the end, before Mike Williamson was sent off in the dying seconds having collected two yellow cards in quick succession. Swansea City backed up their opening-day win at Manchester United with victory over battling Burnley at the Liberty Stadium. Nathan Dyer's 23rd minute goal saw off the Clarets but it was not without scare as Burnley dominated the second half and probably should have returned home to Lancashire with a point. Danny Ings was a constant thorn in the Swansea defence and goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski had to make an excellent second-half stop to deny David Jones and preserve the 1-0 success. Summer signing Mauro Zarate volleyed a debut goal in West Ham's 3-1 victory at Crystal Palace to ease the pressure on manager Sam Allardyce. - Brewin: West Ham cruise to victory Stewart Downing and Carlton Cole also fired home as the Hammers eased past the managerless Eagles, who were unable to add to Marouane Chamakh's smart finish. Palace's second straight defeat plunged the south London club into further distress, with the board still hunting a replacement for Tony Pulis. Southampton and West Bromwich Albion played out a goalless draw as Ronald Koeman's first home game in charge of Saints failed to usher in an exciting new era. Both sides resisted the urge to bring in their big-money summer strikers as Shane Long and Brown Ideye were left warming the Southampton and West Brom benches respectively. The duo came on, but could not make telling contributions, with Baggies boss Alan Irvine no doubt the happier of the two managers to settle for a share of the spoils.
