Fabregas 'right to replace Lampard'

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has backed summer signing Cesc Fabregas to fill the role occupied by the departed Frank Lampard.

Lampard, the London club's record goal-scorer, joined New York City FC earlier this summer and will play on loan at affiliated club Manchester City until January.

But Mourinho believes former Arsenal captain Fabregas, who arrived at Stamford Bridge in June, has all the attributes to take Lampard's place.

The Spain international, 28, came on as a substitute and scored in Chelsea's 2-1 friendly win over Ferencvaros in Budapest on Sunday, and the manager told the official Blues website: "Frank is the history of the club -- history nobody can forget.

"Fabregas is the future. History is history, but the future is more important at the moment. My opinion, and the opinion of my players, is that Fabregas is the right player to occupy that central position in midfield."

Chelsea will face Real Sociedad in a final friendly before they kick off their Premier League campaign at newcomers Burnley next Monday.
