Spurs beat Schalke, Barca cruise

Emmanuel Adebayor was on target for Tottenham in their victory over Schalke.

Tottenham Hotspur ended their preseason on a high with 2-1 win over Schalke at White Hart Lane.

Emmanuel Adebayor opened the scoring in the first half after being set up by Lewis Holtby and Roberto Soldado doubled Spurs' advantage after the restart by scoring from close range.

Kevin-Prince Boateng halved his former side's lead by firing past Hugo Lloris with 10 minutes left but Spurs, who were being watched by former striker Jermain Defoe, held on for victory.

The fact that Soldado, who only netted six league goals in his debut campaign in north London last season, got on the scoresheet will be of huge relief to head coach Mauricio Pochettino, whose side kick off their Premier League campaign at West Ham next Saturday.

PREMIER LEAGUE PREVIEWS

As we count down to kickoff on Aug. 16, ESPN FC previews all 20 teams in this season's competition. Can Burnley, QPR and Leicester stay up? Will the new signings of Alexis Sanchez, Diego Costa and Adam Lallana help usurp Man City's crown? Will Manchester United get back on track under Louis van Gaal?

La Liga giants Barcelona cruised to a 6-0 victory over HJK in Helsinki.

Barca, beaten 1-0 by Napoli in their last preseason outing, were 4-0 up inside 24 minutes thanks to a Munir El Haddadi brace and further goals from Sergi Roberto and Gerard Pique.

Marc Bartra headed home a fifth after the restart and Sandro Ramirez completed the rout with eight minutes to play with a powerful shot across the face of goal.

Everton slumped to a 3-1 defeat to Bundesliga newboys Paderborn in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Second-half goals from Marvin Ducksch and Daniel Bruckner secured victory for the German side, after Mortiz Stoppelkamp's penalty had cancelled out Chris Long's long-range effort in the first period.

Swansea had a Saturday to forget as they were beaten 3-0 by Villarreal at the Liberty Stadium.

Goals from Ikechukwu Uche, Bruno Soriano and Denis Cheryshev ensured the Yellow Submarine left south Wales with plenty to cheer, while the defeat leaves Swans boss Garry Monk with plenty to ponder ahead of next weekend's opener against Manchester United.

Southampton were beaten 1-0 by Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen at St Mary's.

New Saints signing Graziano Pelle headed into his own goal on 57 minutes when attempting to make a clearance.

Burnley will approach next weekend's clash with Chelsea buoyed by a 3-1 victory over Serie A side Hellas Verona 3-1 at Turf Moor.

Matt Taylor scored on his home debut to cancel out Lazaros Christodoulopoulos' opener shortly after the interval, before Lukas Jutkiewicz gave Sean Dyche's side the lead with his sixth preseason goal.

Substitute Ross Wallace then completed the scoring with a finely taken free kick shortly before full-time.

Sunderland capped off their preparations for the forthcoming season by beating Udinese 2-0 at Heritage Park -- the home of Northern Football League side Bishop Auckland.

Santiago Vergini -- who has just returned on loan -- was the Black Cats' hero, with the Argentina defender opening the scoring on 56 minutes.

He then won a penalty 60 seconds later, which was duly converted by Connor Wickham.

A last-minute goal from youngster Reece Burke secured West Ham United a 3-2 victory against Sampdoria at Upton Park.

Mark Noble scored from the penalty spot just before half-time to cancel out Stefan Okaka's 16th-minute strike for the Italians. Eder restored Samp's lead just after the hour-mark before Mohamed Diame levelled again for the Hammers with 13 minutes to play.

It seemed as if the spoils would be shared until Burke tapped home a cross from fellow substitute Elliot Lee to give West Ham only their second victory of preseason.

Leicester City's preparations for a return to the top flight ended in fine style with a 1-0 victory over Werder Bremen at the King Power Stadium.

Foxes captain Wes Morgan headed home a Riyad Mahrez corner in the seventh minute to score the only goal of the game and ensure City ended their preseason on a high.

West Brom also shipped three goals as they were convincingly beaten by Porto at the Hawthorns.

Brazilian midfielder Casemiro opened the scoring before Jonas Olsson equalised for the hosts five minutes before the interval. The Portuguese side upped their game in the second half and Jackson Martinez helped himself to a brace to secure a 3-1 victory.

Stoke City secured a credible 1-1 draw at Freiburg, with summer signing Mame Biram Diouf claiming his first goal for the club to cancel out defender Pavel Krmas' second-minute opener.

An own goal by Queens Park Rangers defender Clint Hill in the second half consigned Harry Redknapp's side to a 1-0 defeat to Greek side PAOK at Loftus Road.

Crystal Palace played out a goalless draw against Bundesliga side Augsburg in Germany, while there were also no scorers in the game between Aston Villa and Parma.

Aritz Aduriz scored a hat trick inside the opening 24 minutes as Athletic Bilbao eased to a 3-1 win at Borussia Monchengladbach, while Hoffenheim drew 1-1 with Genoa.
