Barca allow Messi, Suarez, Neymar, Pique extra time off for Christmas

Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Neymar and Gerard Pique will all begin their Christmas holidays after helping Barcelona hammer Espanyol in the Catalan derby on Sunday.

Suarez scored twice and Messi once in a 4-1 win at Camp Nou and they're two of four players who Luis Enrique will not call on for Wednesday's Copa del Rey game against Hercules.

Instead they will be allowed extra time off to cater for long-haul flights to South America, with Diario Sport reporting that Pique, too, will head in that direction to spend Christmas in Colombia with his partner Shakira.

"Four players will now go on holiday: Messi, Suarez, Neymar and Pique," Luis Enrique confirmed in his postgame news conference after the game against Espanyol.

"They will not play against Hercules. Everyone else will go after the Copa del Rey game. The three forwards have gone at this time before. It's normal and we've done it in other seasons, too."

Messi especially earned his early break, creating two of the Barca goals in an outstanding second half performance, before scoring his 12th league goal of the season in stoppage time.

It even earned praise from Espanyol manager Quique Sanchez Flores and Luis Enrique is running out of superlatives for the Argentine forward.

"All Barca fans are almost used to Leo playing in this way," the Blaugrana coach added. "We can stop praising something which seems so routine, but we shouldn't get used to it.

"We should keep enjoying it and make sure we appreciate Leo as something unique."

Barca will close 2016 with the second leg of their round-of-32 cup game against Hercules. They drew the first leg in Alicante 1-1.

Progression to to the next round, Luis Enrique added, would be a good end to the year, but he's focusing on the future, not the past.

"It sounds good to end the year having won the La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup," he said. "It sounds good but that belongs in history. What's of interest now is that in 2017 we win more titles.

"We're in good shape. We're not where we wanted to be in the league but we have to accept Madrid's numbers have been spectacular.

"But there's a long way to go in La Liga and we will put up a fight. In the Champions League we qualified top of the group and in the cup we will try to make the next round on Wednesday."
