Ex-Barcelona chief Joan Laporta: Gerard Pique right for presidency

Joan Laporta has told Diario Sport he would vote for Gerard Pique to become Barcelona president if he decided to stand and again criticised those currently in charge of the club.

Pique, 29, said earlier this month that it was his ambition to one day preside over the club as president but had no interest in becoming coach.

Former president Laporta would give the defender his full backing and said: "I would vote for him.

"He has a great personality, loves Barca, is brave... he has all the qualities to be a great president."

Laporta said he also envisaged Xavi Hernandez as a future manager, adding that "he has the personality" and added that he would like to see Pep Guardiola in charge at the Camp Nou again one day.

However, he again hit out at current president Josep Maria Bartomeu and his predecessor Sandro Rosell.

He remains angry about the settlement Barcelona reached with Spain's tax authorities to pay €15 million in owed taxes and a €5.5m fine to settle a tax fraud case over the deal to sign Neymar in 2013.

That meant admitting the club was at fault in the complex transfer and saw Bartomeu and Rosell cleared of any personal wrongdoing.

"It's a cowardly and unworthy pact which has condemned Barca to a double tax offence," Laporta said, having previously encouraged fans to oppose it.

"Rosell and Bartomeu can't get away with it. It's an insult. The commissioners have to avoid Barca being condemned [for the tax fraud]."

He said the way the club dealt with Lionel Messi's tax case in the summer, when the Argentine and his father were in court accused of defrauding the Spanish tax authorities out of €4.1m, was odd.

"As ex-president I find it strange the club hasn't been more forceful on this matter," he added.

"It was proven that the state attorney had connections with Real Madrid. Here is where they had to act more forcefully, as I know other clubs act when it's their players.

"When Leo was in court, the president of Barcelona should have accompanied him."
