Barcelona star Luis Suarez close to agreeing new contract - reports

Luis Suarez could sign a new contract with Barcelona before Christmas, according to multiple reports in the Catalan press on Wednesday.

Mundo Deportivo reported that Suarez's agent, Pep Guardiola's brother Pere, met with the club at the end of the September regarding a deal that would keep the Uruguayan at Camp Nou until 2021, when he will be 34.

Fellow Barcelona-based newspaper Sport added that Barca will pay the 29-year-old €16 million per season, bringing him in line with Neymar, who agreed a new contract with the club earlier this year.

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu had already confirmed that Suarez was next in line for a new deal after Neymar, Javier Mascherano and Sergio Busquets signed extensions.

Suarez, who joined the club from Livepool in 2014 for €80m, has proved hugely successful at the Camp Nou, scoring 92 goals in 104 appearances.

His total of 40 goals was the highest in La Liga last season as he became the first person other than Messi or Crisitiano Ronaldo to win the Pichichi award since his compatriot Diego Forlan in 2009.

For that reason, the club has decided that Suarez's current terms, which expire in 2019, should be reviewed to bring his salary in line with his importance to the team.

As well as Suarez, Bartomeu also said the club are planning to offer new contracts to Messi and Ivan Rakitic. The Argentine is out of contract in 2018, while the Croatia midfielder's current deal runs through to 2019.

Meanwhile, Andres Iniesta is also keen to end his career with the club and extend his terms beyond 2018, and Luis Enrique's two-year deal is up for renewal at the end of the current season.
