Andres Iniesta close to Barcelona return, Jeremy Mathieu back training

Barcelona's Andres Iniesta is nearing a return to action following a knee injury while defender Jeremy Mathieu is back in training ahead of next weekend's match against Alaves.

Club captain Iniesta was injured in the 2-0 win over Sevilla at the Sanchez Pizjuan on Aug. 14, with an initial report from the Catalan club suggesting he would be back in action sooner than Mathieu.

But while Mathieu has now returned to the training pitch, Iniesta is still working individually -- although he has stepped up his rehabilitation.

The 32-year-old tweeted on Tuesday: "Onto the next phase of my recovery. Patient and raring to go again."

Mathieu has been sidelined since damaging his hamstring in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup win against Sevilla earlier this month.

It was the latest in a string of knocks suffered by 32-year-old Frenchman, who missed Euro 2016 with a calf injury after he had previously made a quick comeback from a meniscus problem.

He has now trained twice this week, though, taking part in sessions with Barca B due to the volume of first team players currently away on international duty.

In total, 16 members of Luis Enrique's squad are with their national sides at the moment, with only Mathieu, Iniesta, Aleix Vidal, Jordi Masip, Arda Turan and Rafinha left behind.

As well as Mathieu and Iniesta's anticipated return to contention, Neymar is due back in Spain next Wednesday after leading Brazil to an Olympic gold medal and is in line to make his first appearance of the season against Alaves on Sept. 10.
