Javier Mascherano targets 'many more years' with Barcelona

Javier Mascherano says he wants to stay "many more years" with Barcelona as he prepares to begin his seventh season with the Catalan club.

The Argentina international had been linked with a move to Juventus and gave contradicting statements on his club future during the Copa America before finally saying that Barcelona "have no intention of me leaving."

Speaking to reporters in Guatemala, Mascherano said he was now fully focused on preparing to play for Barcelona, where he has a contract until 2018.

"I hope that we will have a good season," he said. "As always, I start the season with a lot of excitement, I hope that it will be the best yet."

After Lionel Messi announced his plans to stop playing for Argentina, Mascherano was reportedly one of many of the Albiceleste to be considering their own international retirement.

But the 32-year-old said on Saturday he was not ready to reveal his decision.

"Very recently a Copa America completed that was painful for us," he said of Argentina's defeat in the final to Chile.

Asked about his international future, he said: "It's not time to say anything. I keep it to myself."
