Barcelona striker Lionel Messi into longest goal drought since 2008

Barcelona striker Lionel Messi is into the longest goal drought of his Barcelona career since before his first Ballon d'Or-winning season after failing to score in the first 23 minutes against Valencia on Sunday.

Messi, who had been chasing his 500th career goal for the past four matches, went 515 minutes without a goal, beating the 474-minute spell between April and May 2010 and the 455 minutes between February and August 2006, before his securing milestone 63rd-minute strike on Sunday.

The Argentina captain had already passed his 436-minute spell from February 2010 and now there are only two periods during which he has failed to score for longer -- both coming at the start of his career in Barcelona.

Messi's 816-minute spell between October 2006 and March 2007 is the longest, with his 757 minutes between November 2007 and February 2008 in second. However, the Ballon d'Or winner was only 19 and 20 years old when he began those periods.
