Barcelona star Luis Suarez can get 50 goals this season - Jamie Carragher

Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has said his former Anfield teammate Luis Suarez should aim to get to 50 goals this season with Barcelona.

Suarez's four-goal haul in Wednesday's 7-0 Copa del Rey semifinal first leg win over Gary Neville's Valencia brought him to 35 goals in 33 games in all competitions so far this season, more than he managed even during his phenomenal final season in a Reds shirt in 2013-14.

Carragher said in an interview with Barca TV and that the Uruguayan had been fantastic at Liverpool but that since joining the Catalan club had become one of the best players in the world.

"Suarez was always a fantastic player but with Barcelona he's moved up another level," Carragher said. "We always knew how good he was at Liverpool, but he had to do that in the Champions League. Now he's one of the greatest players in world football. You wonder how many goals he'll get by the end of the season. He should be looking at maybe 50 goals."

Suarez is clearly thriving playing alongside fellow South American superstars Lionel Messi and Neymar, and Carragher said he had seen while attending Wednesday's hammering of Valencia how unselfish each big name attacker was.

"Barca have three star players at the front and they're very unselfish," he said. "They always try to assist each other. They scored seven against Valencia, but it could have been ten or twelve if they had been more selfish or ruthless. But they all want to see each other do well, and I think that's a great trait of Barcelona."

Carragher said that Messi remained clearly the world's best player, while saying he had always had a soft spot for current Barca club captain Andres Iniesta and long-serving playmaker Xavi Hernandez.

"I think it's obvious [Messi is the best]," he said. "So, if I couldn't pick him then I'd say Iniesta. I think he's a fantastic player and person. He seems very humble. He never talks too much. Him and Xavi were always my favourite Barcelona players."

There was also praise for another former teammate, with Carragher saying he was impressed with how Javier Mascherano had adapted to playing centre-back for Barca, having been a midfielder during his time in England.

"Mascherano is playing in a different position to what he did with Liverpool," he said. "He's built a great big man-little man relationship with [Gerard] Pique. He's very aggressive and because he was a midfield player he can also play the ball from the back, which is what Barcelona want."
