Lionel Messi will miss Barcelona's preseason tour of the United States because the Argentina international "needs to rest," according to coach Luis Enrique.
Messi is joined by Neymar, Javier Mascherano, Dani Alves and Claudio Bravo as players to miss the three-match International Champions Cup, which starts against the LA Galaxy at the Rose Bowl on Tuesday, followed by games against Premier League clubs Manchester United and Chelsea.
Luis Enrique has granted the players extra time off after all five competed with their respective national teams at the Copa America in Chile last month.
"They all need holidays," Luis Enrique said. "We like fans to come and see Barca but those players that are here have great quality.
"We are sorry for the fans but the season is very long."
For the second time in 2015, fans in America will miss the chance to watch Messi in action as the four-time World Player of the Year sat out two Argentina friendlies there in March with a foot injury.
Messi was sensational last season while helping Barca win a Primera Division, Copa del Rey and Champions League Treble -- he scored a total of 60 goals and set up 28 more in 60 appearances.
The 28-year-old forward then captained Argentina at the Copa America and was aiming for his first major title with the senior team.
However, Chile beat the Albiceleste 4-1 on penalties in the final following a goalless draw after 120 minutes.
"Messi's season is almost eternal and he needs to rest," Luis Enrique said.
The Spanish coach added: "I prefer not to do tours, truthfully. It's nice to come, but there are components that are uncomfortable, such as jetlag, for example.
"But there are commitments at the club and the competition that is presented is interesting. The same can be done in Europe, but you have to accept it."
After the International Champions Cup, Barca will take on Europa League winners Sevilla in Tbilisi, Georgia, on Aug. 11 in the UEFA Super Cup.
Luis Enrique's side begin their La Liga title defence at Athletic Bilbao on Aug. 22.
It will be the teams' third meeting of the campaign as Barca and Athletic face each other in the two-legged final of the Spanish Super Cup.
The opening leg will be played on Aug. 14 while the return match will take place three days later.
The Catalan giants will have the opportunity to earn their sixth title in 2015 when they compete at the Club World Cup in December.
