Xavi back in Barcelona squad vs. Atletico Madrid in Copa del Rey

Xavi Hernandez has been declared fit and available for Barcelona's Copa del Rey quarterfinal first leg at home to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.

Xavi, who turns 35 on Jan. 25, had been sidelined recently with a calf muscle problem picked up in Barca's 1-0 La Liga defeat at Real Sociedad in their first game of 2015.

His return to match fitness was confirmed in Barca's club statement announcing the match squad for Wednesday night's late match at the Camp Nou.

"Xavi Hernandez is back in the reckoning for a place in the first team after been given the medical all clear to play tonight against Atletico Madrid," the statement said. "After missing the last four games with a calf injury, the captain has been called up into Luis Enrique's 18-man squad for the Cup quarterfinal first leg."

The veteran playmaker's return means a selection poser for Blaugrana coach Luis Enrique, who has seen Ivan Rakitic, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets perform well as a trio during the recent 3-1 victory over Atletico and 4-0 defeat of Deportivo La Coruna in La Liga.

Regular La Liga goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is rested for this Atletico game, so third-choice Jordi Masip will be on the bench as backup for usual Copa and Champions League starter Marc Andre ter Stegen.

Reserve full-back Martin Montoya and young attacker Munir El-Haddadi have also not been named in the match squad. Currently injured Douglas and Jeremy Mathieu and long-term absentee Thomas Vermaelen miss out too.
