Eric Abidal announces his retirement after a glittering career in European football. (1:18)

Eric Abidal insists that his decision to end his playing career does not necessarily mean he will start working for former club Barcelona.

Abidal, 35, announced last Friday he was calling time on a career which included winning four La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues during six years at the Camp Nou.

The former France defender earned popular affection in Catalonia after he won the second of those European crowns in 2011 just two-and-a-half months after having a tumour removed from his liver.

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu recently said Abidal would have a role to take up at his former club should he so wish upon ending his playing days.

However, Abidal insisted he could just as easily begin work with Greek side Olympiakos, the club he signed for only last summer.

"To be honest, as you know I always tell the truth, I didn't stop my career to return to Barca," he told RMC. "I stopped my career because I feel it's time.

"Having said that, I do have the opportunity to go to Barca. But you have to know that I also have an opportunity with Olympiakos, and I have already been approached by UEFA. And then, I have created my foundation, so I have to devote some time to that. I am going to try and do things in the best way possible."

Abidal added he had been offered roles in which he would be able to exploit his experience of the game at the highest level.

"Yes, yes, above all to try and transmit what I have been able to learn, especially to youngsters," he said. "That's a little bit of what Barca have offered me. But also Olympiakos, who have made me an offer to be part of their organisation in relation to preseasons, sponsoring and marketing."
