Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has told Eric Abidal that his former club "would open its doors" to him should he wish to return to work at the Camp Nou.

RMC reported last week that Abidal, 35, is negotiating an end to the contract he signed with Olympiakos in the summer with a view to hanging up his boots before 2015.

The defender, who announced his retirement from international football with France after missing out on the 2014 World Cup, enjoyed six successful years at Barca as the club dominated European football.

Bartomeu told RMC that should Abidal, who also underwent a liver transplant during his time in Catalonia, wish to go back to the Blaugrana after his playing career is over then he will be given that opportunity.

"I don't know if he'll come back to the club. You'll have to ask him," he said. "He left an incredible impression with us. He's a player with great values, a player who works a lot.

"We have always told him that if one day he leaves football, Barca will open its doors to him. He knows that. He has many things to do off the pitch. If Eric decides to do that, he will always find a door open at Barca."
