Luis Suarez: No nerves before first Barcelona goal vs. APOEL

Barcelona forward Luis Suarez said he had not been worried about going five games without scoring for his new club after he finally netted in his sixth during Tuesday's 4-0 Champions League group win at APOEL.

After joining Barca from Liverpool for 80 million euros last summer, Suarez had to wait three months to make his debut for disciplinary reasons, and was then unable to get on the scoresheet in games against Real Madrid, Celta Vigo, Ajax, Almeria and Sevilla.

The goal -- which finally came after 390 minutes on the pitch for his new side -- was an excellent one, with the Uruguay forward fooling his marker on the edge of the box and then shooting from 15 yards with a slight deflection helping the ball in to put Barca 1-0 up in Nicosia.

Speaking on TV Espana after the final whistle, the 27-year-old came close to admitting that the wait to break his duck had been playing on his mind.

"Of course as a forward it is almost important to score," Suarez said. "And there had been some games when I could not. I was not anxious, there was no reason to be. I was relaxed because although I was not scoring I was helping the team.

"I am very happy to be here, where I wanted to be -- to help the team to achieve objectives as the games pass. We can all improve which is important."

APOEL's well-organised defence had conceded just one goal in each of their previous four games in the competition, but Barca eased to victory with Lionel Messi scoring a hat trick to move clear as the leading scorer in Champions League history with 74 goals in 92 games.

Suarez, who was nominally playing at centre-forward with Messi starting from a right-wing position, said he and his fellow South American could regularly swap positions as the game progressed.

"It depends on the moment," he said. "Sometimes we take turns in the positions in attack. Today was a good game to try and fix their centre-backs. We knew they were going to sit deep and defend.

"They had done that at the Camp Nou and it was not so easy for us. But in the first half we took some of our chances, and played very well. That opened up the pitch and we could create more opportunities. It was also important to pressure well when we lost the ball."

Paris Saint Germain's 3-1 home win over Ajax in the group's other game means Barca must now win their final group meeting with the Ligue 1 champions on Dec. 10 at the Camp Nou to top the standings and be seeded for the last-16.

"We know PSG were favourites against Ajax," Suarez said. "They are a very difficult opponent, but we need to beat them. We have our fate in our own hands at home at the Camp Nou."

Before then Barca travel to Valencia in La Liga on Sunday, a fixture which Suarez recalled was never an easy one for his club.

"All games are difficult, even more at Valencia, where it is always difficult for Barca," he added. "They are coming from a defeat and will be very motivated."
