Barcelona's Thomas Vermaelen could have operation to cure injury troubles

Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen could undergo surgery to resolve his long-term absence, according to sports director Andoni Zubizarreta.

Vermaelen was signed by Barcelona from Arsenal for around 15 million pounds in the summer but has yet to make a competitive appearance for the Catalan club.

The centre-back sustained a hamstring injury while representing Belgium at the World Cup and has since struggled to return to full fitness.

Barca announced on Monday that Vermaelen is suffering with a sore right hamstring and missed training on Sunday.

"We don't know if Vermaelen is now going to need surgery, we are studying the situation," Zubizarreta told reporters ahead of Tuesday's Champions League game at APOEL Nicosia.

"We are worried for him and the medical staff are evaluating what is best."

Zubizarreta also responded to criticism following Barca's 5-1 win over Sevilla after members of the board were whistled by supporters.

He said: "I accept the reaction in the best way possible. Barca are always the focus of attention and even more so when there are questions being asked."
