Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta says Carles Puyol's duties in his new off-pitch role at the club will involve scouting potential transfer targets and developing young players.

Long-serving Blaugrana captain Puyol, 36, retired at the end of the 2013-14 season, after struggling with persistent serious knee problems for over two years, and was immediately offered a job in the club's "technical department."

Zubizarreta has said on the club's official website that the newly created role will cover many different areas where Puyol's wealth of experience will be useful.

"[Puyol] will not only be helping us with transfers, but also with training methodology and coordinating youth football," the former Barcelona goalkeeper said.

"His experience of top level football will of great use to us. He will start with a training process, but his knowledge will be a major contribution. He will also be helping new players to settle in and with the monitoring of players out on loan."
