The former Netherlands international is currently in charge of Heerenveen, but had already spoken of his intention to depart the club at the end of the season.

And AZ released a statement on their official website on Friday announcing that the AFAS Stadion is to be Van Basten’s next destination.

"AZ and Marco van Basten have reached a verbal agreement on a contract as head coach until the summer of 2016. The 49-year-old will succeed Dick Advocaat,” the statement read.

"The last formalities will be completed in the next few days, after which the Utrecht-born coach can be presented."

Van Basten arrived at Heerenveen in 2012 but opted against renewing his contract with the club after being forced to sell several key players to raise much-needed cash.

The former Netherlands boss will take over from Advocaat, who only arrived earlier in the season following the sacking of Gertjan Verbeek. He has also stated his intention to depart at the end of the current campaign.
