David Alaba wins Austrian Player of the Year for record fifth time in a row

David Alaba has been named Austrian Player of the Year for the fifth time in a row, with the Bayern Munich star winning the poll ahead Dynamo Kiev's Aleksandar Dragovic and Stoke City attacker Marko Arnautovic.

Alaba, 23, now tops the all-time roll of honour, and with his five consecutive personal accolades has picked up one more trophy than former Austria international Ivica Vastic, 46.

"That's a huge honour," Alaba was quoted as saying by Kurier. The Bayern defender was named the best player of 2015 by nine out of 10 Austrian Bundelisga coaches, who took part in the poll conducted by Austrian wire APA.

"I am thankful to God, but also the coaches who voted for me," Alaba added.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge praised the Bayern all-rounder as an "extraordinary footballer," telling the club's official website: "He has everything a world-class player needs: great talent, passion, the ambition to get even better, and lots of experience, which is incredible for his age."

Alaba has won four Bundesliga titles and the Champions League since graduating from Bayern's youth system, and is among the nominees for FIFPro's 2015 World XI.

Rummenigge also highlighted Alaba's role in Austria's qualification for Euro 2016, calling him "an essential factor" for his country's first berth at a "major tournament after a long absence."

Austria, whose only previous European Championship appearance came when they co-hosted the 2008 edition, had not qualified for a major international tournament since the 1998 World Cup. They take on Portugal, Iceland and Hungary in Group F.
