U.S. international Emily Sonnett primed for Sydney FC debut

Emily Sonnett's Portland Thorns won the NWSL title earlier this month.

Sydney FC's latest recruit Emily Sonnett will have just five days in Australia under her belt when she makes her debut in Friday's W-League season opener.

The United States international, who also plays for the Portland Thorns in the National Women's Soccer League, said everything is "very new" but she has already found some important common ground between the Sky Blues and her home team.

"The mentality of the players is they want to win, they want to have results," the 23-year-old told reporters on Wednesday.

"And I think it's really cool, the crossover from America ... it's great they do want to win."

Sonnett, who was the first overall draft pick in the 2016 NWSL and helped the Thorns claim the league title this year, said she had heard great things about the W-League from Aussie teammates Hayley Raso and Ashleigh Sykes.

Emily Sonnett has won 12 caps for the United States.

She said the recent success of the Matilda's didn't hurt her desire to travel down under either.

Sydney will start the season at home against Brisbane Roar, with the match their first in the competition under coach Ante Juric.

He has been tasked with guiding the side to the title after they were thrashed 5-1 by Perth Glory in last season's semifinals.

The Sky Blues have also recruited star Matildas striker Lisa de Vanna and fellow Matildas ace Chloe Logarzo, who is returning to the club.

Young Matildas trio Remy Siemens, Ally Green and Princess Ibini, who has already played for the Matildas, are also part of Sydney's squad.
