Mickael Tavares insists an opening day win will be crucial for the Central Coast Mariners as they brace for arguably the most difficult opening month to the A-League season.
The Mariners have a flight to Perth for their season opener before meeting title heavyweights Sydney FC, Brisbane Roar and Western Sydney Wanderers.
A daunting trip to face defending premiers Adelaide await in round five, making this week's performance against the Glory key in ensuring team morale stays intact.
"It's very important for the confidence to start well because we have some difficult games coming," Tavares told reporters on Thursday.
"It's very important to win the first one, or at least don't lose, and have a good performance.
"Every game is important. We're going to approach the game the same as we do for Sydney FC, for the next week or the week after."
Former Sydney FC pair Tavares and Jacques Faty are considered key pieces for the Mariners as they strive to improve on last year's disappointing ninth-placed finish.
He is likely to form a defensive midfield tandem with captain Nick Montgomery.
Only defender Jake Adelson is unavailable for selection in a side that lost first-team regulars Mitch Austin, Joshua Rose and late addition big-name Luis Garcia from last season's squad.
"I'm used to [playing] a lot with Monte -- we try and find some good combination. We have a good relationship so hopefully we'll be good on the pitch," Tavares said.
"I'm excited to play in this jersey and give back the confidence to the club. I don't see why we should not play good or win this game. It would mean a lot for the confidence.
"Last year is the past, now we have a new team. We're going to be different than last year."
