Sydney FC hands Matt Simon one-year contract extension

Striker Matt Simon has been retained as part of Sydney FC's attack for the next A-League season.

Simon had been off-contract but was expected to sign a new deal for 2016-17, as part of coach Graham Arnold's rebuilt side following a disappointing season.

The 30-year-old was often used as a substitute in the A-League, but is a proven goalscorer and provided the Sky Blues with valuable muscle up front in the club's historic run to the round of 16 in the Asian Champions League.

"I feel we are a squad who has a lot more to give in the A-League this season and, with the new additions to the squad, we've got a great shot at the silverware," Simon said.

Arnold, who coached Simon at his former club Central Coast, praised the striker's power, muscle and ability to cause headaches for defenders.

"He definitely provides us with a different option in the front third and, despite struggling with a rib injury for a large part of last season, he still put his body on the line for the club," Arnold said.

Simon's re-signing follows the recent recruiting of former Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Danny Vukovic and ex-Melbourne City defenders Alex Wilkinson and Michael Zullo.
