Tim Cahill sends Melbourne City reminder with goal for Hangzhou

Tim Cahill gave a reminder of his abilities to suitors Melbourne City by scoring the opening goal as his Chinese club Hangzhou Greentown secured an important win on Sunday.

Australia's record scorer netted in a 4-2 victory at Yanbian Funde that helped Hangzhou move out of the relegation zone by climbing from 15th to 13th on the Chinese Super League (CSL) table.

Cahill, whose CSL contract expires later this month, produced a trademark header in the bottom corner as he met a cross from the left.

It was his fourth goal in 16 CSL appearances for Hangzhou who have only four league wins this season. They are now two points above the drop zone, with Changchun Yatai and Shandong Luneng on course to go down to the second tier.

Cahill, 36, has been heavily linked to a move to Melbourne City after the introduction of the A-League full season guest player rule for 2016-17, which allows star names to be paid above the salary cap, in addition to the club's marquee signings.

With 47 goals in 91 games for Australia, Cahill is targeting a fourth World Cup at Russia 2018. His professional career began with English club Millwall in 1998.
