Defender Alex Wilkinson, one of the heroes of Australia's 2015 Asian Cup triumph, has returned from South Korea to join A-League club, Melbourne City.
The 31-year-old is Melbourne City's fifth signing of 2016 in addition to goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis, defender Osama Malik and midfielders Nick Fitzgerald and Anthony Caceres.
Wilkinson was previously with South Korean club Jeonbuk Motors where he won consecutive K-League titles in 2014 and 2015. But he made his name as captain of a successful Central Coast Mariners side in the A-League for five seasons.
Melbourne City head Coach John van't Schip said Wilkinson's experience would help the sister club of Manchester City push for A-League honours.
"Alex brings with him a lot of experience, having played for the Socceroos and in club football in Asia, and his qualities will help strengthen our defence," Van't Schip told the club's official website.
"He is an important addition to the squad having enjoyed success both in the A-League and abroad."
With 16 Australia caps to his name, Wilkinson started in each of Australia's three group matches at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and was a key member of Ange Postecoglou's squad that lifted the AFC Asian Cup on home soil last year.
Wilkinson will wear the No.2 jersey at Melbourne City and will link up with the squad next week.
