Sydney FC thrash Central Coast as Adelaide brush Wellington aside

Sydney FC consolidated their place in the A-League playoff places by thrashing rock-bottom Central Coast Mariners 4-1 on Saturday.

Alex Brosque starred for Sydney as they eased past the Mariners, who saw goalkeeper Paul Izzo pick up two yellow cards inside the opening half hour.

Brosque opened the scoring with a tap-in on 12 minutes and doubled his tally on 24 minutes from the penalty spot after Milos Ninkovic was fouled by Jake McGing.

Izzo then picked up a second yellow card when conceding a penalty on 28 minutes that Mickael Tavares converted.

Harry Ascroft gave Central Coast hope seven minutes before the break, but McGing scored a late own goal to restore Sydney's three-goal cushion.

Adelaide United extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a 3-0 win over the Wellington Phoenix.

The Reds took the lead through a Manny Muscat own goal just before half-time and added two more in the final 20 minutes following the sending-off of Wellington midfielder Albert Riera in the 58th minute.

Craig Goodwin, in the 73rd minute, and Michael Marrone, who scored two minutes later, were the second-half scorers for seventh-place Adelaide.
