MELBOURNE, Australia -- The Victoria state government will consider changing laws to restrict marine safety device sales in a bid to stop supporters setting off flares during Australian A-League matches.
The proposed law changes were raised after police say almost 30 flares were set off during the Melbourne Victory- Melbourne City A-League match on Saturday.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, who was at Saturday's game, said it was a "great game spoiled a little bit by the silly actions of a very small number of people." He said if flare-related law changes are required, he is prepared to do so.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton told local radio: "There's a big increase in the amount of flares being let off at these events, and they are an ugly blight and dangerous to people."
