Tim Cahill rules out A-League return, eyes Chinese contract extension

Australia's record scorer Tim Cahill has hinted that he will extend his stay in the Chinese Super League rather than head home to play in the A-League.

Cahill, who turns 36 in December, is out of contract when Shanghai Shenhua ends their season in a few weeks but said there had been no approaches from Australian clubs.

"You can't have temptation if you've got no offers," Cahill said on a trip to his hometown of Sydney. "There's never really been a relationship with me and the FFA when it comes to that, or even A-League clubs.

"There's always been a question asked of me by media but never the question asked (of) clubs or the FFA.

"It is what it is but it's highly unlikely."

Cahill added that he would be happy to stay in China and extend his contract with Shenhua for another year after scoring nine goals in 25 matches this season.

"Touch wood, something will be done around about the 22nd [of October] or roughly around then," said Cahill. "It's all about what's right for my family and myself personally."

The former Everton midfielder has scored a record 41 goals in 86 appearances for Australia and has played in three World Cups and three Asian Cups.

Still first choice of national coach Ange Postecoglou, he bagged three goals in January's 2015 AFC Asian Cup as the Socceroos lifted the continental title for the first time, on home soil.
