Austrian forward Marc Janko was denied a spectacular winning goal when his volley in the 33rd minute seared past keeper Ben Kennedy but was incorrectly ruled out for offside.
Newcastle remain second-bottom in the table, now four points ahead of winless Western Sydney Wanderers but having played three games more. Sydney lie fifth but trail leaders Perth Glory by 13 points and second-placed Melbourne Victory by six.
