Sam Kerr scores W-League marquee status with Perth Glory, makes FFA history

Matildas striker Sam Kerr's value to Australian women's soccer has been reflected by her gaining marquee status for the upcoming W-League season.

Kerr, 25, is the first female player to be supported by the Football Federation Australia fund.

She joins Dwight Yorke, Alessandro Del Piero, Tim Cahill and Melbourne Victory signing Keisuke Honda as players who have benefited from marquee status in the local leagues.

The financial inducement for Kerr is to help facilitate her re-signing with Perth Glory.

The FFA said Thursday's deal emphasised the organisation's commitment to women's soccer after Kerr spurned European offers to return home.

"We truly hope that historic days like today will ensure we create an important legacy for professional female players in the future," FFA chief executive David Gallop said. "Sam's reach extends well beyond the football field, as illustrated by her being the current Young Australian of the Year.

"Sam Kerr is truly one of the best female footballers in the world right now and one of the most recognisable sports people in Australia and football worldwide."
