Injured Mat Ryan to miss Australia's next two World Cup qualifiers

Goalkeeper Mat Ryan will miss Australia's next two AFC World Cup qualifiers after suffering a knee injury in Valencia's 1-1 draw with Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday night.

Ryan's place in the squad will be taken by Adelaide United veteran Eugene Galekovic.

The Socceroos face Bangladesh in Perth on Thursday before an away match against Tajikistan on Sep. 8.

"It's a blow for Mat to miss these games but he picked up a knock in Spain overnight and with the travel distance and the lateness of his club game we have decided to bring in Eugene Galekovic," Australia coach Ange Postecoglou confirmed on Monday.

"Eugene is more than capable replacement and he will join us in Perth and we will move ahead without Mat."

After taking over from long-time custodian Mark Schwarzer, 23-year-old Ryan played every minute in the Socceroos' last two tournaments -- the 2014 World Cup and the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

He was goalkeeper of the tournament as Australia were crowned Asian champions on home soil in January.

VfB Stuttgart goalkeeper Mitch Langerak, who has earned six caps since 2013, is tipped to start in both upcoming games.

Ryan's knee injury is not believed to be serious. He moved from Belgium's Club Brugge to Valencia at the start of the season, signing a six-year contract.

34-year-old Galekovic, who has eight Socceroos caps, made his international debut for Australia in January 2009 and was part of the 2010 and 2014 World Cup squads.

Australia won their opening AFC second round World Cup qualifier 2-1 away to Kyrgyzstan on June 16.
