Atletico Madrid's Diego Godin: 'It is never easy to reach a final'

Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin denied it had been easy after Thursday's 1-0 semifinal second leg win at home to Arsenal secured a 2-1 aggregate passage to the 2018 Europa League final.

Atletico never really looked troubled on the night, with Diego Costa's goal from Antoine Griezmann's assist just before the break enough to progress against an Arsenal team that had a lot of the ball but created few chances.

Coach Diego Simeone has now guided Atletico to a fourth European final in seven seasons in charge -- winning the 2012 Europa League, but losing to neighbours Real Madrid in the 2014 and 2016 Champions League deciders, while Atletico also won the 2010 UEL under former coach Quique Sanchez Flores.

The Uruguay international told BeIn Sports that it's was always difficult to reach a European final, and Atleti's aim now was to go and finish the job.

"It is never easy to reach a final," Godin said. "And we have another opportunity to win another European trophy. We want to get our batteries back to 100 percent for this final. And to win it, as finals are there to be won."

Atletico kept a 12th straight clean sheet at home in all competitions, with Granit Xhaka's 20-yard shot early in the second half being the only time Godin and colleagues allowed a shot for goalkeeper Jan Oblak to save. Godin avoided any personal praise from the interviewer.

"My job is to defend, concentrate, help my teammates and keep things organised," Godin said. "Luckily, today I was able to do that. We are there to defend.

"I always speak about the collective. The work and effort of all the team is impressive. In games like this, you must have tremendous concentration, we were able to deal with their attacks, luckily, and pulled out a very complete game."

The game provided Atletico's first important win at their new Wanda Metropolitano home, with rojiblanco fans responding by cheering the team to their hotel on Wednesday evening, and then all through the evening of the game.

"The fans are fundamental for us. Today, we could feel they were with us yesterday, before the game, during the game," Godin said. "We have the best fans in the world, it is impressive."
