Atletico Madrid star Nico Gaitan could return from injury against Rostov

Atletico Madrid playmaker Nico Gaitan will be out for less time than feared after tests showed he had not suffered a serious injury in the 4-2 win at home to Malaga on Saturday.

When Gaitan left the Estadio Vicente Calderon in the first half, it seemed likely that he would miss the forthcoming Champions League and La Liga games against FC Rostov and Real Sociedad.

However an Atletico club statement suggested the problem was not as severe as had been feared, and some reports suggested he could be back to face Rostov on Tuesday.

"Nico Gaitan this Sunday underwent medical tests which confirmed that our player suffered a traumatic swelling in his right hip with a bruise in the muscle alongside," the statement said.

"The Argentina international's recovery will now be monitored."

Malaga's visit to Atletico also saw striker Kevin Gameiro score two more goals to bring him to five in La Liga since his €30 million summer arrival from Sevilla.

But the France international told radio show El Larguero: "I am doing well, but we have still not seen the Gameiro from Sevilla.

"I need a bit more confidence and other things, but I am feeling good and bit by bit my game will improve.

"I hope we see another Gameiro soon, as I am not yet at 100 percent."
