Jose Gimenez and Alessio Cerci fitness boosts for Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Gimenez is fit again following a thigh muscle injury, while Alessio Cerci has also returned to training with his Colchoneros teammates.

Gimenez suffered the injury at home to Deportivo La Coruna in late September, and has been sidelined since with Stefan Savic establishing himself as the usual partner for defensive rock Diego Godin.

The Uruguay international has now recovered fitness and is in contention to feature in Saturday's La Liga game at home to Malaga, according to an Atletico club statement.

"Jose Maria Gimenez has received this afternoon the medical all clear and is now available to Diego Pablo Simeone," the statement said.

"The Uruguay international was injured in the first half against Deportivo de la Coruna, with a grade two adductor injury in his right thigh. Our player has already worked with his teammates this afternoon, and could be available for our next game against Malaga."

Cerci has been out of action a lot longer, with a loan move to Lazio breaking down last summer due to a knee problem, which has meant the 29-year-old has not been able to work with his teammates yet this term.

The former Torino winger has barely featured for Atletico since joining for €15 million in summer 2014, with loan spells back in Serie A at AC Milan and Genoa also being affected by injury.

Atletico have not officially confirmed his return to fitness, but Cerci has been mentioned in a photo slideshow on the club website with the tagline "Cerci, recovered, now back working under Simeone."

The one time Italy international suggested in an interview with Corriere Dello Sport recently that should he prove his fitness a move on loan to Bologna in January could happen.
