Atletico Madrid's Diego Godin sprains ligaments in ankle

Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin sprained ligaments in his left ankle while helping his team to Wednesday evening's 1-0 Champions League Group D win at home to Bayern Munich.

The Uruguay international played his usual part at the centre of the watertight Atletico defence. Bayern's in-form centre-forward Robert Lewandowski was shackled, with Colchoneros winger Yannick Carrasco's goal enough to get the three points for his side.

Godin appeared to finish the game with an injury, and now looks a big doubt for his club's tricky trip to Valencia in La Liga next Sunday, as well as his country's World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Venezuela in early October.

The club confirmed after the game that an initial examination had found a sprain to the ligaments in his left ankle, and further tests would be required to discover the full extent of the injury.

"After a first exploration from the medical services of the club, Diego Godín suffers a sprain of the lateral ligament of his left ankle," a club statement said.

"Additional tests will be performed in the next hours and is pending evolution."
