Diego Simeone liked 'everything' about Atletico Madrid's defeat of Bayern

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone hailed a complete team performance among the best of his time at the club after Wednesday evening's 1-0 Champions League Group D win at home to Bayern Munich.

Yannick Carrasco's first-half goal was the difference between the teams, although Atletico should have scored more with Fernando Torres missing a number of chances and Antoine Griezmann sending a late penalty against the crossbar.

Carlo Ancelotti's Bayern had plenty of the ball but few clear opportunities, and although Robert Lewandowski did glance a free header wide late in the second half the scoreline was not really a fair reflection of Simeone's side's dominance.

The Colchoneros coach told his postgame news conference that his team had known what to do in each moment of the game and executed their plan to perfection.

"Today I liked everything about our performance," Simeone said. "They played with a passion, and with a commitment, that is very difficult to achieve. We pressed well when we had to press. We sat back well when it was needed, and we were able to counter.

"We suffered when we had to over the 90 minutes. We were up against an opponent which is one of the three best teams in the world. It was one of the best performances since I've been at Atletico Madrid."

After six points from their first two games, last year's UCL finalists Atletico now look in control of Group D, however Simeone cautioned that their next game in Rostov on Oct. 19 would be a test.

"It would not be good to think too far ahead," he said. "There is still a long way to go. The results are going well. But we will have to go to Russia to play Rostov. They drew 2-2 with PSV [Eindhoven] today. So that will be difficult. We must be attentive.

"Then if we are in the position we want to be in, we will think again."

Griezmann's previous Champions League penalty was a miss in last May's final against Real Madrid, but Simeone said he was not thinking of handing duties to anyone else.

"Antoine has missed a penalty -- as have [Diego] Maradona, [Leo] Messi, [Michel] Platini, Zico ... the best players in the world," he said. "He will keep taking them. He has tremendous quality and nothing else.

"We are very happy with Antoine's work, today he also worked hard in covering [Arturo] Vidal when they had the ball. He also set up Carrasco's goal. He brings us so many things -- is one of the best in the world."

This is scheduled to be Atletico's final season at the Calderon, where they have now won 26 of their last 30 European home games, with a move to new stadium La Peineta possible next summer.

"The club is experiencing a unique moment, in football, and have a new fantastic stadium to come," Simeone said. "These are moments which will not return. We should save them, remember them, the fans, the players, the coaches, everyone."
