Atletico director Clemente Villaverde wary of 'top clubs' in Group D

Atletico Madrid are gearing up for a challenging group phase campaign in the Champions League after being drawn against Bayern Munich, PSV Eindhoven and FC Rostov in Group D.

Diego Simeone's side cleared numerous hurdles last season to reach the final, only to lose to Real Madrid for the second time in three years.

"We always have great enthusiasm in this competition and it will be the same this season," Atletico general director Clemente Villaverde said on the club's official website.

"It's an important group. They are all top clubs. We already had the opportunity to face PSV and Bayern last season and I think it's a strong group."

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann may have lost out to Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo in the voting for UEFA's Best Player In Europe but his only concern is winning titles with his teammates.

The French striker suffered Champions League heartbreak when Real beat Atletico after a penalty shootout last season and his national team also fell to Ronaldo's Portugal in the Euro 2016 final that was staged in his own country.

Griezmann told Atletico's website: "I am proud to be among the top three in Europe and to represent my country and Atletico.

"I am very happy and glad for the performance that I had last season. I hope to do as well or better this season and, why not, with titles at a collective level."

Griezmann scored 32 goals in 51 appearances for Atletico and will make his season debut in Sunday's game at Leganes.

He missed his team's opening game of the season, a 1-1 draw at home to Deportivo Alaves through suspension.
