Luciano Vietto's Atletico Madrid future up to Diego Simeone - Diego Godin

Amid reports that Atletico Madrid striker Luciano Vietto is a target for Barcelona, Atleti captain Diego Godin has said that any decision about the Argentina player's future would be up to manager Diego Simeone.

Vietto, 22, joined Atletico from Villarreal for €20 million last summer but only scored three goals as he slipped out of the first-team picture under Simeone.

On Friday, Barcelona striker Luis Suarez admitted that Vietto would be another excellent addition at the Camp Nou in this transfer window, saying: "[Vietto] is a great player. I liked him when he played against us. He can hurt defences. He would bring a lot here."

He has also reportedly drawn recent interest from Sevilla and during a news conference on Friday, both Godin and fellow Atleti captain Gabi spoke about the club's options for forwards.

"Luciano is a great player who contributed here in his way but now it is up to [Simeone] to evaluate his performance. I am not surprised that Luis [Suarez] says good things about him."

Gabi, however, said he felt Vietto would stay while admitting that the club needs to add a striker up front.

"To not have to sell players speaks well of the club's economic situation and how they are doing things," the 33-year-old said. "We are doing something important and all that is left is the big goal and to keep winning titles."

The club have been criticised for their lack of a world-class No. 9. Griezmann, who has played the role for the past two seasons, is coming off a season that saw him go straight from the Champions League to Euro 2016 for France.

"The strikers make the difference," Gabi said. "We have Fernando, who has renewed his contract, a Luciano, Griezmann and [Angel] Correa. The foundation of the team is there. If another striker comes who can guarantee goals, everything will be much easier."

Atletico Madrid did not authorise Vietto to participate for Argentina in next month's Olympics in Rio.
