Diego Simeone: Atletico Madrid attack must improve after Astana UCL draw

Diego Simeone has called on Atletico Madrid to create more chances in future after a 0-0 Champions League draw at Astana on Tuesday afternoon.

Atletico dominated possession throughout the game in Kazakhstan, and midfielders Koke and Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco hit the woodwork with attempted crosses as the visitors pressed at the end of each half.

However, Astana goalkeeper Eric had a surprisingly comfortable 90 minutes, with starting centre-forward Fernando Torres and substitute Jackson Martinez continuing their poor runs in front of goal.

Simeone told his postgame news conference that while he was generally happy with how Atleti had played, he wanted more in attack.

"It was not possible to score. We created four or five chances, but the team worked well," Simeone said. "At the back they did not create any chances against us, but in the attacking part we must generate more."

The Kazakhstan Premier League champions are making their first appearance in the Champions League group stage, and played a full part in a game that was undertaken in freezing temperatures at the Astana arena.

"Those who had not seen Astana play at home might have been surprised, but we were not," Simeone said. "I had said it was going to be a difficult game, tough, hard. There is no need to reproach the team."

Atletico went top of the Group C standings on seven points -- temporarily, at least -- before Benfica (six points) host Galatasaray (four points) later on Tuesday.

Simeone said that a home loss earlier in the group to Benfica meant his side could not afford any further slips.

"With the defeat against Benfica I had said that the group would get complicated," he added. "But we must beat Galatasaray [at home on Nov. 25] and then see what happens then."
