Atletico Madrid's Luciano Vietto out for a month after appendicitis

Atletico Madrid forward Luciano Vietto is set to be out for three to four weeks after having his appendix removed.

Vietto, 21, had a slow start to his Atletico career after joining from Villarreal for €20 million in the summer, but came off the bench in last weekend's 1-1 draw with Real Madrid to score a late equaliser in what was his first goal for the club.

However, the Argentine's chances of immediately building on that moment were hit by news that he suffered a bout of "acute appendicitis," and following an operation, he will now be sidelined for the best part of a month.

"Luciano Vietto has been operated this morning for acute appendicitis at Monteprincipe Hospital in Madrid, where he remains hospitalised," an Atletico statement read. "The surgery went smoothly and the player is feeling well, waiting to start his recovery in the next few days.

"After the discomfort he felt last Tuesday and that prevented him from training, the player underwent an abdominal CT with contrasts in which an acute appendicitis was detected and of which he has been operated. The period of recovery for this type of intervention is estimated in about three to four weeks depending on the patient's evolution."

Vietto himself told Atletico's official website that the operation had gone to plan and he was hoping to be back on the pitch quickly.

"Everything went well and I hope to be with the team as soon as possible," he said.
