Diego Simeone set to sign new Atletico Madrid contract

Diego Simeone has confirmed he hopes to be able to make an announcement on his Atletico Madrid future shortly after his sister said he was close to agreeing a new contract.

Simeone has proved a huge success since taking charge at Atletico in 2011, winning the Europa League, Copa del Rey and La Liga, as well as reaching last season's Champions League final.

His long-term future has been uncertain as his current deal has little over a year to run, but his sister and representative, Natalia, indicated to Spanish state TV that the Argentine was close to agreeing new terms.

"Surrounding the renewal of Simeone at the club, there will be good news in the next few days," she said on Tuesday, according to AS.

Speaking after Atletico's penalty shootout victory at home to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, she added: "The fans went home happy tonight and they will be happy again soon. [Simeone] always believed in the work of his players.

"Hard work always pays off, as he would say. It was emotional as the fans at the Calderon always give you a shot of adrenaline."

Simeone said an extension had not yet been finalised but suggested he was close to prolonging his stay.

"There is nothing resolved yet but I hope to be able to make an announcement soon," he told his postmatch news conference.
