Atlanta United's Josef Martinez brings season tally to 16 goals in 14 games

Atlanta United's "game-changer" Josef Martinez continued his torrid scoring streak with his second hat trick of the week on Saturday.

After scoring three times in Atlanta's 7-0 rout of nine-man New England on Wednesday, the Venezuelan added another treble in the 3-3 draw with Orlando City.

Together with the lone goal he scored last Sunday against FC Dallas, Martinez's seven-goal week has taken his season tally to 16, just three behind MLS leader David Villa.

But Villa has scored his 19 in 25 games, while Martinez, who missed time with a thigh injury early this season, has only played in 14, with 11 starts -- giving him an incredible goal scoring ratio of 1.39 goals per 90 minutes.

"He's a game-changer," Atlanta United captain Michael Parkhurst said after the game. "He's a handful to defend against. His first step is so quick. It's impossible to defend that goal he put in near post off that cross from Tito [Hector Villalba].

"He's just too quick. He's always in the right spot in front of the goal. He's lethal. He loves to score goals and disappointed when he doesn't."

Martinez, who arrived on loan from Serie A side Torino before the season, has since signed a permanent deal with Atlanta. With Torino, he scored 13 goals in 76 games over three seasons.

The 24-year-old also became just the third MLS player to record a hat trick in consecutive games and matched a league record held by four others with his third hat trick of the season.

Martinez's latest feat came in front of an MLS-record crowd for a standalone game, as Atlanta United reported ticket sales of 70,425 for their third game at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Atlanta opened the top deck for the first time to break the 21-year old MLS standalone game attendance record of 69,255, set at the Rose Bowl in 1996 in the Los Angeles Galaxy's first-ever game.

"This team is just incredible," said MLS commissioner Don Garber, who was on hand for the game. "This team in six days will have more than 150,000 people come to three soccer matches.

"This is a great testament to [owner] Arthur [Blank's] vision, his execution because I think you need to be able to deliver on your plan, not just have a great plan. He's got a terrific organization. It's a good moment for all of us in MLS."
