Paul Lambert has praised Aston Villa as "a great club with great people" despite his sacking as manager last month.

Lambert, who took over from Alex McLeish in June 2012, left after a run of poor results and performances saw the Midlands club drop into the Premier League relegation zone.

Tim Sherwood has now taken the reins at Villa Park, but Lambert told the BBC's Football Focus TV programme: "I don't have any bad things to say about Aston Villa. It's a brilliant football club.

"I came in at a tough time, but when the financial reports came out their losses are way down now, so from that point of view the club is in probably a lot healthier position than when I went there.

"It's a great club with great people at it. There's things where you look back and think: 'Maybe I should have done that better or different' but I've got nothing but good things [to say] about the club."

Since leaving Villa, Lambert has spent time at German clubs Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund as he works towards his UEFA Pro Licence.

He said he had no immediate plans to look for a managerial job overseas, but added: "Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp are probably the best I've seen working... just the way they can get the best out of people."

Lambert, a former Dortmund player who helped the club to a Champions League triumph in 1997, praised Klopp as "a catalyst" of BVB's success.
