Alessandro Costacurta says he would have no problem with Francesco Totti breaking his record as the oldest goal scorer in Serie A, amid rumours that the Roma captain could play on for another year.
Totti, who turns 40 at the end of the month, made his first appearance of what is his 25th season in Italian football with a goal in Roma's 3-2 win over Sampdoria on Sunday, ensuring he has now scored in 23 of those campaigns.
He suggested afterwards that this season may not necessarily be his last, even if he was only offered a one-year contract extension until 2017 in the summer.
Costacurta, who scored a penalty in his final appearance for AC Milan at the age of 41 years and 25 days, believes Totti could be around next season to beat his record.
"When you have a record broken then you are a bit sorry, but Francesco would deserve it," Costacurta said in Gazzetta dello Sport. "I didn't really think, though, that after a career filled with so many knocks and injuries he would still be able to hit this level.
"[Having his contract renewed] depends on how he is and what he can give to the group. If he wants to play all the time then that could cause problems, but if instead he accepts this smaller yet decisive role, he could be unique."
Roma's elimination from the Champions League in the playoff round means Totti no longer has the opportunity this season of bettering his record as the oldest goal scorer in that competition.
