Roma could have conceded more than six against Barcelona - Maicon

Roma defender Maicon has criticised his own team after their 6-1 defeat to Barcelona on Tuesday night, saying got off lightly.

Just over a year after losing 7-1 at home to Bayern Munich, the Giallorossi suffered another heavy defeat in Europe.

This time it may not carry the same consequence, with Roma still able to qualify for the last 16 even with a draw at home to BATE Borisov in their final group fixture.

It could have shown them to be even further adrift, however, according to Brazilian right full-back Maicon.

"We didn't do anything," he told Mediaset television. "We defended for 90 minutes against a side who still had the freedom to play however they wanted, sending the ball in at will over our defence's backs.

"We did try a few counter-attacks, but 6-1 was even a let-off. Considering the way we played, we could have conceded more goals."

A draw would be enough against BATE for Roma to go through, as long as Bayer Leverkusen do not beat Barca in their final game in the group next month.

A win at the Stadio Olimpico would see Roma through regardless of events at the BayArena.

"We've still got to continue along this path without doing what we did here, which was not play at all," Maicon added.

"We're used to moving into spaces and keeping possession ourselves. Well this time we did nothing, but Sunday's another important game against Atalanta and we've got to forget everything about Barcelona and focus on the league."
