Kevin Strootman rejects retirement reports after knee operation

Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman has dismissed claims his career might be over by posting a picture of himself working hard on his comeback.

Strootman, 25, spent the best part of nine months on the sidelines up to last December after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. That forced him to miss the end of the 2013-14 season, the World Cup and much of the first half of this campaign.

He has made just 36 appearances in the last two injury-hit seasons, but he continues to be linked with a move to Manchester United with coach Louis van Gaal still to be keen on taking him to Old Trafford.

In January, only a few games into his comeback, Strootman aggravated the same knee in Roma's 1-1 draw at Fiorentina. A further operation was required with scar tissue removed from the knee, although additional cartilage damage was also discovered during surgery.

There had been reports in the Italian media in recent days suggesting the Netherlands international will not be seen on a football field again due to the nature of his injury, but that has been rubbished by Strootman, who insisted via Twitter that he is on course for a comeback.

Strootman began his career at Sparta Rotterdam and played of FC Utrecht before making his name at PSV Eindhoven. He was signed by Roma in the summer of 2013 for 17 million euros and has 25 Netherlands caps to his name.
