Roma set their sights on making sure of second place after Verona draw

Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini has said securing second place in the Serie A table is the new objective after the 1-1 draw at Hellas Verona on Sunday.

The result left Roma nine points adrift of league leaders Juventus -- and after draws in eight of their last 11 matches, their chances of catching the Bianconeri look slim.

Roma host Juve next weekend, giving them a chance to reduce the gap to six points, but Sabatini said: "Juve now have their first match point and we've just got to think about defending second spot, which is going to be difficult.

"We've got to be serious, with few words and more action. We're not winning because some things are not working the way they used to.

The team always likes to play an attractive football, but we're not managing it. Let's hope things get better."

Speaking at his postmatch news conference, coach Rudi Garcia bemoaned the Verona result and told reporters: "It's just one of those moments when not even luck is helping us out.

"Things aren't going well. We played a good first half, and it was incredible that we came in at the break at 1-1.

"Then [Alessandro] Florenzi got hurt and they equalised with only a half chance. We didn't show as much patience in the second half and we committed more mistakes. With a bit more luck, we could have had things wrapped up by half-time."
