Garcia: We've proved ourselves (1:08)

Roma head coach Rudi Garcia believes his side proved themselves following their 1-1 draw at Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League. (1:08)

Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini says that he wishes the Italian league was more competitive ahead of the Giallorossi's top-of-the-table clash with Juventus on Sunday.

Rudi Garcia's side's perfect start to the season is matched only by Serie A champions Juventus and both sides already enjoy a comfortable seven-point cushion over fifth-placed Inter.

With Milan, Napoli and Fiorentina located even further down the table, Sabatini fears this season's title race could once again become a two-horse affair, with Roma looking to eclipse the Bianconeri to end their 14-year wait for the Serie A title.

"With Juventus we can compete, we are happy to be able to play them on level points," said Sabatini, after collecting an award which recognised him as the best director in Serie A last season.

"I would hope that the championship will also involve others -- if the dynamics were to be those of last year then it becomes difficult.

"If, however, other teams are up in the standings -- I am sure this will happen -- it will be different and I believe that our chances might grow.

"It is not great news for Serie A [that Roma and Juve are already ahead of the others]. We are pleased to be top alongside Juve, but I would rather have a season that was more complex, with more high-level matches.

"It can happen, in Italy there are strong teams that will emerge soon. Both Roma and Juventus could compete in other leagues; I won't say to win them, but to honour them."

However, Sabatini was quick to dismiss reports that Serie A has lost its glamour, insisting that Italian teams could still compete with Europe's best despite financial constraints.

"I do not believe in the inferiority complex of Italian football. It is still an extraordinary expression of technique, tactics and mentality," he added.

"We have no petrodollars, but football can also be done with other resources, which I know and so do the other directors in Italian football. We have to react and we have the opportunity to do so."

Roma have attracted a plethora of plaudits following their performance in the 1-1 Champions League draw with Manchester City on Tuesday, and Sabatini believes that the Giallorossi are well equipped to succed in the competition.

"We had already played a Champions League match with CSKA [Moscow], spectacular in both the result and the level of performance, but it certainly was not enough to convince," he said.

"We had played at home against a team that was supposedly weak, but that certainly is not weak and will prove it in the next games.

"We went to Manchester to try to play our football. We have gained additional awareness, we want to be in the competition and we want to do well until the end of the season."

Roma hope to have Kevin Strootman available for the reverse fixture against City on Dec. 10 and Sabatini echoed Garcia's remarks that the Netherlands international remains an important part of the club's future.

The Dutch midfielder has been continuously linked with a move to Louis van Gaal's Manchester United despite having been ruled out since March with a knee ligament injury.
